5 signs your business needs international recruitment

5 signs your business needs international recruitment

Local hiring has its limits, especially in food service, hospitality and the trades. Many employers get used to running short-staffed without realizing what it costs them. Here are five signs it's time to widen your search internationally.

1. The same position has been vacant for more than two months

You posted the job, tapped your network, maybe raised the wage, and applications are still scarce or off the mark. When a position survives two or three hiring cycles, the problem is no longer your posting: the local talent pool for that trade is exhausted.

2. Overtime has become the norm

Your team covers the missing position week after week. In the short term, it holds. In the medium term, it means hours paid at a premium, fatigue, and a real risk of losing your best people.

3. You turn customers away or cut your opening hours

Closing one more day, taking dishes off the menu, turning down groups or reservations: this is the most expensive sign. Every reduced service is revenue you will never get back.

4. You hire, but nobody stays

If new hires leave after a few weeks, you pay for training and onboarding several times over. A worker who comes from abroad with a life plan in Canada is often strongly motivated to commit and stay. Experienced candidates also chose their trade by vocation, not by default.

5. You need specific skills, or French

Experienced cook, mechanic, bilingual attendant: some profiles are almost impossible to find locally. And if part of your clientele speaks French, a French-speaking employee becomes a real service asset.

What now?

If you recognize at least two of these signs, international recruitment is worth a look. Outside Quebec, the federal Francophone Mobility program lets you hire a French-speaking worker without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), usually in 10 to 14 weeks.
